2004 has been the best season in the history of Finnish bandy when their national team won the world championship of that year which was held in Sweden. This is the only one world championship so far (as at 2010) won neither by USSR/Russia nor Sweden.
Hopefully the Finnish team will gather them up and give fight to these two bandy giants at the upcoming championships by winning gold again to make these competitions more interesting, intriguing and unpredictable and give a boost to the development of bandy in the land of Suomi.
Here you can watch the historical golden goal scored by the Finnish team in the final game against Sweden (don't be confused by the advertisement, which is placed automatically):
Another record the Finns made at that championship was defeating Russia twice, first in the group tournament and then in the semifinal game. The score in both games was 4:3. The last time Finland had done it was in 1991 when they beat USSR (Russia's predecessor) 2:1 at that year's championship, hosted by Finns themselves. Here you can read a report about one of these 'historical victories' as it says (in Swedish):
Matchfakta:
Ryssland–Finland (2–3)
0–1 Ari Holopainen (11), 0–2 Vesa Vuokila (13), 1–2 Ivan
Maksimov (27), 1–3 Ari Holopainen (36), 2–3 Aleksej Mjasojedov (45), 3–3 Ivan Maksimov (55), 3–4 Ari Holopainen (89).
